Family: Ptilonorhynchidae
Adult female, Tench Reserve - Nov 2003

Status: Resident / Uncommon
The Satin Bowerbird is a bird of rainforests and surrounding areas. I have seen males displaying along the old railway track below the RAAF site at Glenbrook in the Lower Blue Mountains which only about 2km as the Bowerbird flies from where this female was photographed near Penrith. However it is rather uncommon here in what is virtually suburbia.
Size: 27-33 cm
Voice: Two note whistle, hissing and mimics other birds.
Nesting Ecology: Males build a bower on the ground which they decorate with coloured paper, drink straws etc. The nest is a shallow collection of sticks and leaves from 3 - 20m above the ground in the fork of a tree. Oct-Dec
Australian Distribution: East coast of QLD around the Atherton Tablelands, and from Rockhampton Qld down the E.Coast to the Otway Ranges, Vic.
